This year’s Met Gala theme was “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” inspired by the dandy fashion era of the 18th and 19th centuries, and every A-lister from Rihanna to Doechii pulled out all the stops for their intricate looks.
But let’s be real—Zendaya has proven she’s Met Gala royalty every year since she debuted on the museum’s famous steps in 2015. Z, who served as co-chair for last year’s event, came dressed to kill in a wide-brimmed hat and all-white Louis Vuitton suit tailored to perfection.
Her longtime friend and stylist, Law Roach, has collaborated with the multihyphenate on her look every year, but he revealed that he’d be attending the gala as a guest, too.
“We are going to be on the Met Gala steps. Yes, separately this year,” he told E! News in April. “That’s going to be really amazing. We’re doing our own thing this year, which is exciting.”
However, fashion fiends assumed that something must have fallen through the cracks during their planning process because Shōgun standout and awards season fashion darling, Anna Sawai, pulled up to her first-ever Met Gala in an eerily similar white suit from Dior. Let’s take a look at the stars, side-by-side:
Law actually saw Anna come up the steps in real time as he was being interviewed by Hello Beautiful. He seemed distracted as he looked off in the distance before admitting, “Sorry, she got on Zendaya’s look. I’m so glad we came early.”
“i don’t think that’s ever happened to zendaya before how awkward 😭,” one fan wrote of the mishap, while another likened the situation to that one Samantha Jones x Miley Cyrus scene from Sex and the City 2. Someone else showed sympathy for Anna as it was her Met Gala debut, writing, “I’m more so embarrassed on behalf of the other girl, her style is usually on point and this would've been a MOMENT if it wasn’t ZENDAYA of all people who she was matching with.”
Anna seems to be in pretty good spirits, though, as she and her stylist Karla Welch honored Zendaya on their Instagram Stories.
“We can add homage to Zendaya as well 🌸,” Karla wrote, while Anna truly had the best response, adding, “Celebrating the spirit of Black dandyism and Zendaya 🤍 hehe.”
Ahead of the Met Gala, Anna spoke about her look with The New York Times, saying, “I feel like every carpet, I’ve only worn dresses.” She continued, “This is going to be the first time that I’m getting to kind of channel my androgynous side, and I’m really excited to pay respect to Black dandyism.”
Z hasn’t weighed in on the accidental matching outfits, but Law posted screenshots of the inspo behind her look on his Instagram Stories, including ’70s-era Bianca Jagger. You know how the saying goes: great minds think alike.
